Why Did We Get Inflation? John Cochrane Explains the $5 Trillion Problem
Inflation. It’s the economic buzzword that’s been dominating headlines for months, impacting everything from grocery bills to gas prices. But what exactly caused this surge in prices? Renowned economist John Cochrane points to a significant culprit: the massive $5 trillion stimulus injected into the economy during the pandemic.
In his various writings and interviews, Cochrane, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, argues that while supply chain disruptions and the war in Ukraine undoubtedly played a role, the sheer scale of government spending is the primary driver of our inflationary woes.
Here’s a breakdown of Cochrane’s argument and the $5 trillion problem:
1. The Pandemic Response: A Necessary Evil?
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, governments worldwide scrambled to support their economies. Lockdowns and business closures threatened widespread economic collapse. The U.S. government responded with a series of massive stimulus packages, including:
- Direct stimulus checks: Sending money directly to individuals to boost spending.
- Enhanced unemployment benefits: Providing generous unemployment payments to those who lost their jobs.
- Small business loans and grants: Offering financial assistance to help businesses stay afloat.
While these measures were intended to prevent a deeper recession, Cochrane argues they also laid the groundwork for inflation.
2. The $5 Trillion Injection: Too Much, Too Fast
The crucial point, according to Cochrane, is the sheer size of the stimulus. Five trillion dollars is a staggering amount of money to inject into the economy in a relatively short period. This massive influx of cash created a surge in demand, outpacing the economy’s ability to produce goods and services.
3. Demand Outstrips Supply: The Classic Inflationary Recipe
Think of it this way: Imagine everyone suddenly has more money to spend on groceries. If the supply of groceries remains the same, the increased demand will inevitably lead to higher prices. This is exactly what Cochrane believes happened across the broader economy.
The pandemic disrupted supply chains, making it even harder to produce goods. Factories were shut down, shipping was delayed, and raw materials were scarce. The combination of increased demand and limited supply created the perfect storm for inflation.
4. It’s Not Just Supply Chains: Cochrane’s Counterargument
While supply chain disruptions are often cited as the main driver of inflation, Cochrane argues that they are not the whole story. He points out that the magnitude of the price increases we’ve seen cannot be solely attributed to these supply-side issues.
Instead, he emphasizes the role of fiscal policy – the government’s spending and taxation policies – in creating the inflationary environment. He argues that focusing solely on supply chains deflects attention from the government’s responsibility in managing the economy.
5. The Inflation Trap: What’s Next?
According to Cochrane, the challenge now is to bring inflation under control without triggering a recession. The Federal Reserve is raising interest rates to cool down the economy, but this could also slow down growth and potentially lead to job losses.
In Conclusion:
John Cochrane’s perspective on inflation highlights the significant role of government spending in driving up prices. He argues that the $5 trillion stimulus, while intended to cushion the pandemic’s economic blow, ultimately created a surge in demand that outstripped supply, leading to the inflation we’re experiencing today. While supply chain issues certainly contributed, Cochrane insists that the scale of the government’s fiscal response is the primary culprit. This perspective offers a valuable lens through which to understand the complexities of inflation and the challenges policymakers face in navigating the current economic landscape.

It's theft.
Why is anyone at the federal reserve rich? Oh inflation.
Inflation started with Nixon in 1971 when he took us off the Gold Standard. It was for the rich to make more money.
Invest in Bitcoin before retiring by diversifying across assets, allocating a small portion of your portfolio, staying updated on market trends, and considering long-term holding to balance risk and growth.
Would love a comparison to the 2008 economic collapse. Iceland filed for bankruptcy as a result. Ireland is still reeling from their housing issues brought on by the US mortgage crisis. The current inflation is part and parcel of Covid-19. There must be a fundamental issue that connects the two beyond the mere effects of periodic crises. Something deep in our system is broken, so that we hire a migrant class, pay them less, and sacrifice our culture to float Social Security. Insurance is becoming elusive. These fissures scare people into a Socialism mindset. Do we need to raise taxes across the board every 2-4 years, and have fewer children? Printing money is all the fed gov can do.
More money printed under Bush and Trump than Obama and Biden.
The government screws up and the people have to carry the cost. But the government officials who screwed up still get paid and still get their very generous pensions no matter how badly they perform. It’s disgusting.
Wrong! The driving force behind inflation is that we went from being an oil exporting nation to an oil importing nation within the first 24 hours of Biden’s presidency.
What about no longer being energy independent? Gas and diesel touches every segment of the economy.
And algorithm writting greedy corporations and Trump tax cuts.
Printed 5 trillion… And didn't have a plan to take it back. They can print all the money they want as long as they have a plan to burn it.
Democrats and bought Republicans love to tear it down so this country falls so we will join the new world government. Only, there is a radical in the mix. In the last days… the Trump will sound.
Printing money and government spending are the only things that causes inflation.
Milton Friedman
No they definitely had a plan in place
Price gouging and corporate greed
They printed 7.2 trillion dollars.
Did not WANT a plan; plan was to DESTROY ECONOMY
The Fed should go away !
Much like carrying a credit card balance causes a higher payment; the servicing of the national debt created by idiotic spending will crowd out other US spending priorities and weaken its global influence.
The issue is partly this result but more so what the blatant methodology implies. Party patronage bought with debt creation creating long term liabilities. Whenever they can, democrats funded by WEF/Davos crowd seem to be trying to “break capitalism” and Tarnish American exceptionalism by attacking open markets, destroying job creation and turbocharging government spending..
The fact all western countries (Britain, France, Australia) suddenly seem to be enduring the exact super funded socialism push at the same time seems too much of a coincidence to me.
We need to clean up our election system to ensure only citizens with a stake in America’s future can vote. No more Magical Obama/Biden mail in super majorities. We need to overturn citizens united and block BRICS/Davos/WEF money injection into the campaigns of our elected officials.
Wow…
Why did we have inflation? World-wide pandemic, supply chain disruption, followed by increased consumer demand as the world recovered. Add record corporate profits and you have inflation. And yet the US, with all of the "causes" you describe, did better than most other countries.
Easy money by the Fed QE over 10 years just kept kicking an economic crash down the road. People are suffering from inflation which will now go to hyper-inflation as the Fed lowers interest rates while inflation is twice as high as target 2%. The crash will be worse than 1929 because people will not stand in breadlines. They will take what they need by force.
Why not just have market rates, and decentralize the risk? Why is a cartel controlled commodity beneficial to society?
They printed money as stated here. Biden also initiated energy policies that reduced supply of fossil fuel causing energy prices to skyrocket. When energy costs increase, everything goes up. The inflation we have endured and are still enduring is a direct result of bad energy policy by the Biden administration.
Printed way more than just 5 trillion…..
I'm no economist, but I saw this coming nearly 4 years ago. Thanks, spend-happy politicians.
And we had the debt why?? Tax cuts for billionaires, etc. Republicans have been blowing a hole in the budget for decades. Then they can complain about how we cannot afford “entitlement programs”,
