The exceptions that actually apply to an IRA
| Exception | What qualifies | Cap |
|---|---|---|
| First-time home purchase | Haven’t owned a principal residence in the prior 2 years | $10,000 lifetime |
| Higher education expenses | Tuition, fees, books for self, spouse, child, or grandchild | No cap |
| Health insurance while unemployed | Collected unemployment compensation 12+ consecutive weeks | No cap |
| Unreimbursed medical expenses | Only the amount exceeding 7.5% of AGI | No cap |
| Birth or adoption | Per qualifying birth or adoption event | $5,000 |
| Terminal illness (SECURE 2.0) | Physician certifies death reasonably expected within 84 months | No cap |
| Emergency personal expense (SECURE 2.0, since 2024) | Self-certified, one per calendar year | $1,000/year |
| Substantially equal periodic payments (72(t)/SEPP plan) | Must continue for 5 years or until 59½, whichever is later | N/A — ongoing plan |
| Total and permanent disability | Meets the IRS’s definition of disability | No cap |
Exceptions per IRC §72(t)(2) and IRS guidance on the SECURE 2.0 Act’s 2024 additions (emergency personal expense and terminal illness distributions). An exception removes only the 10% additional tax — ordinary income tax on a Traditional Gold IRA distribution still applies.
Why the metal makes this slower in practice
None of these exceptions change how a Gold IRA distribution is actually processed. Unlike a brokerage IRA, where a same-day trade converts shares to cash, your custodian generally needs to sell (or arrange in-kind transfer of) physical coins or bars held at an approved depository first. That settlement can take several business days, which matters if you’re relying on the money for a time-sensitive expense like a home closing or a medical bill.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does converting my Gold IRA to cash first avoid the penalty?
No — whether the penalty applies depends on the reason for the withdrawal and your age, not on what asset the IRA held before the distribution.
Can I use the SEPP (72(t)) exception with a Gold IRA?
Technically yes, but valuing a volatile, illiquid asset for the “substantially equal” calculation each year adds real complication most planners prefer to avoid, which is why SEPP plans are far more common with liquid brokerage IRAs.
Does qualifying for an exception mean I owe no tax at all?
No — an exception only waives the 10% additional tax. Ordinary income tax on a Traditional Gold IRA distribution is still due regardless of which exception applies.
